In February of this year, Funcom had the pleasure of announcing a Beta signup population of close to half a million – one of the largest in the history of gaming. The developer had some success with its initial MMORPG Anarchy Online, with a good turnout upon launch but an inability to monopolize with future expansions. Shadowlands, the game’s most notable addition, received critical acclaim at various levels and rejuvenated the game to new found levels, but could not compete with the dominance of World of Warcraft.

Existing massively multiplayer online roleplaying games are often criticized for being too detached from the gory subjects they are based on. Doing away with the blood and gore for more widespread appeal is not what will happen with Age of Conan.

Hyboria is not a world in which good must triumph over adversity, Age of Conan is different. Age of Conan is an obscure world in which decisions are often hard to make and actions that must be taken prove mentally challenging. Hyboria is worlds apart from games such as World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online.

AoC provides a revolutionary combat system differing wildly from the standard systems of Dungeons and Dragons type systems. This will pose a challenge for most gamers who are only familiar with the click and hotkey system.

AoC could be one of the first major MMORPG episodes to go multi-platform, with implementation planned for at least one major video game console.Age of Conan is truly one for the future and one that will be observed closely by all competitors.

If that’s not daunting enough, the dragons have also enslaved an undead army to help them in their quest to corrupt and consume Tyria. The four playable races–humans, Charr, Norn, and Asura–have banded together to stop the dragons in their quest and are joined by some extra help. Farming wow gold all day?

 

The Alexstrasza talk got me to thinking about having seen Mission Impossible on an idle evening recently. While it’s your basic (though slick) action flick, the standout character was Vanessa Redgrave’s Max-the-arms-dealer. Not only was her entrance thoroughly unexpected, but she was cool, controlled, overflowing with sardonic amusement, and unaffected by the thought of having someone killed. While I would love to see her fight Judi Dench’s M from the Bond movies, that won’t happen, but now I’ve wondering who would make a better dragon (black, not red).

Of course, all of this is entirely academic because we have no idea what the movie is even going to be about, but I am entirely certain that Vanessa Redgrave is a dragon (although possibly this is not news). We’ve talked a lot about a possible plot and the music for the film, but if you got the opportunity to cast it, who would you put in which role? Adam and Alex are busy packing for BlizzCon, so I’ve sneaked into the Queue offices to answer some questions this evening. There’s no consistent theme here, folks; we’re all over the map today with BlizzCon, lore, and player textures. If you don’t see your question here, I still have a few in mind from the last post to answer tomorrow.

There are 3 historical scenarios that can be found in Yogg-Saron’s “brain room”…What is the Shadow Vault event? I would guess that it is something as important lore-wise as the (other) two, but I have no idea.

It’s widely believed that the Shadow Vault “memory” depicts a very recent and very unfortunate occurrence that took place (without player knowledge) after the Wrath Gate event. The NPCs in question are thought to be the souls/spirits/incorporeal whatsamajiggies of Saurfang the Younger and Bolvar Fordragon, who perished in the fight, victim to the Lich King and the Royal Apothecary Society respectively. The Wrath Gate cinematic implies that the Arthas has at least Saurfang’s soul to toy with (which would explain the Orcish Turned Champion), but the identity of the Immolated Champion is less clear. Bolvar is by far the most likely possibility — after all, the Immolated Champion is wearing the same armor Bolvar wore going to his death — but nothing’s been confirmed. Bottom line? Expect to see both Saurfang and Bolvar show up in the Icecrown Citadel raid in some capacity. Do you have any wow gold buying tips? If you have leave me here please. Now “farming” isn’t as fun as duelling and casting spells and all that nerdological geekitude; it’s a time-consuming chore.

Gold and other items in this game are transferrable from one player to another. You could do a ton of work to get some loot and then give it…or sell it, for real money, to a lazy player who just wants to have more toys.

Now the amount someone would be willing to pay for this virtual gold isn’t gonna be worth your time. You’re much better off working at White Castle than pulling shifts on Warcraft, so the farmer-for-hire thing hasn’t taken off in American suburbia.

But some industrious entrepeneurs made a few calculations and learned a very valuable fact… The amount an American kid is willing to pay for this imaginary gold is well worth the time of a Chinese peasant. So the Warcraft sweatshop was born.

As you read this, there are rooms of rural Chinese sitting at terminals, farming computer gold in 12-hour shifts (each character has 2 people working it 24 hours a day), staying carefully out of the purview of the game’s administrators, and trying not to bother the real players. Agriculture on planet earth can’t provide them with the $150 (equivalent) check they recieve for a month of Warcraft farming.

That’s 42 cents an hour, and low enough that the white middle-man can make a sweet profit when he resells these “goods” to his customers over here.

This process is the same phenomenon as clothing manufacture, and a million other tangible things. And you know what happens when a flood of cheap foreign goods suddenly becomes available on the American market? The value of the products plummet.

In Warcraft, it’s the currency itself that’s being overproduced, not just any product. That means it’ll take more units of that currency to exchange for any product. Inflation. The price of everything goes up. Everything you worked so hard to save up suddenly becomes worth so much less.

The Warcraft economy appears to be on the lip of this plunge and administrators are taking steps to curb inflation. When they find a career farmer, they ban the character. Now the farming company has to re-buy the game and set up a new account. This makes the process of creating these goods overseas more expensive, and functions similar to a tariff (which is a protective tax).

With these tariffs, the price of overseas goods rises, and it becomes more worth the time of Americans to…well…farm their own damn gold. As it were.

But there are ways of getting around this barrier. One is through a black market. (This system is already a black market, though not illegal in the real world, and such an approach would only mean being more sneaky and stealthy.) Another is to increase productivity per dollar on the supply side. e.g. Xian used to get $150 every month (42 cents/hour), but now he only gets $100 and has to work 14 hour shifts, to counteract the effect of the tariff.

But however it happens, water finds its way to the ocean, and cheap foreign goods find their way to the American market. If it gets really out of control in Warcraft, then gold, and anything that can be produced through time and effort–anything that’s not finite in amount will become worthless, and trade will occur among things that are finite, or require much greater skill to acquire…or everyone will turn the game off and read a book. Probably Dragonlance.

If that happens, it’ll be like a factory shutting down. It’ll put a bunch of rural Chinese out of work all at once.

There is a balance, which in the real world, the Treasury, and the Federal Reserve, and a bunch of International Organizations try to maintain. And by maintain, I mean getting as much cheap shit for themselves as possible without throwing the system completely out of whack. (In the finance industry, human rights is a footnote, if anything.)

What lies ahead for the Warcraft economy? Let’s keep watching it in the future.

My concerns are with the balance of powers, both between alliance and horde and between the character classes themselves.  With other expansions when new races and classes are introduced there has been a huge shift in power, only to be followed by another huge shift.  This pendulum style action leaves many things to be desired and often creates dissent among players.  For those of you that get lost, you may want a cataclysm guide.

If Blizzard is to make this latest wow expansion a hit then they need to focus on the ever expanding issues surrounding the game itself.  It is not just a matter of new content or new level caps but the nature of the beast, the game they have created.  Will it hold the audience captive?  Will it live up to the hype or will the empire that we have grown up with collapse?  All of these questions will be answered on d day, the day the Cataclysm expansion is released, but until then who knows what will happen.

I can tell you this, the preorders will be huge and the lines outside Wal-Mart the day before will be annoying to say the lease.  My friends and family will be missing in action and I will have to send out search and rescue missions.  Only I know were they are, in the office or basement feeding there addiction.  Lucky for me the addiction has lost its grasp and now I find myself writing about the sad state of affairs surrounding the game world of warcraft.  I will look for you in the perils of wow cataclysm!

1) Loque’Nahak Leather – Loque’Nahak is a rare beast in Sholazar Basin that spawns every 8 – 10 hours. However, Loque’Nahak are usually heavily camped by Hunters. If you can catch one, you can get some good price for its leather.

2) Arctic Fur – This is the hottest reagent from skinning in the Wrath of the Lich King. Unfortunately, it is a rare item. It has a good chance of dropping off almost every beast in Northrend.

The best places to look for Artic Fur are Scion of Quetz’lun, Plagued Proto-Dragon and Howling Fjord.

3) Cobra Scales – The cobra scales can be found in Outland. If you are looking for this item, it is best to search at Shodowmoon Valley.

This is one of the highest profitable reagents due to no one farming them anymore and their demand for twinks. They usually sell between 7 – 15g.

4) Nerubian Chitin – The Nerubain Chitin can only be skinned from Nerubian NPCs. The NPCs commonly roam around Azjol-Nerub and Ahn’kahet of The Old Kingdom.

If you are a level 80, you can get the Nerubian Chitin by hunting them down as a solo. Otherwise, you have to find a group that have less common drop rates.

5) Icy Dragonscale – This item can be found on dragonkin inside Violet Hold. You can get the scales in the northern part of Sholazar Basin.

There are usually drakes flying in the air and also on the ground. You can kill these creatures or break hatchlings out of the eggs for the skin.

Icy Dragonscales come from skinning Northrend dragons. The scales are used in many different pieces of armor, but are particularly in demand for making one particular type of epic melee armor. With the help of the Warcraft Tycoon’s Handbook, you can stake out the best source of these valuable scales and earn like crazy by serving this demand.

Nerubian Chitin, not surprisingly, comes from the Nerubian beasts roaming Northrend. Like the Icy Dragonscales, this material is used in many things, but is particularly valued as a component of one kind of melee armor. If you know the best places to farm the Nerubians, you’ll be able to generate piles of chitin quickly. Sell this stuff and you’ll be well on your way to amassing a fortune in gold.

Arctic Fur is the rarest and most valuable of skins. The method of farming this stuff is different than you use for the other two rare skinning products. No matter what you do, getting Arctic Fur will be tough, but a top-quality gold guide will contain tips and advice that help you increase your chances of success. Harvesting Arctic Fur is definitely a challenge, but if you master it, your character will soon be rolling in gold.
