Horde Side’s Best Race For Mage

By Jeff Kamar | November 28, 2009

So, looks aren’t a factor because mages always look cool…so you’re going to pick your race based on racials instead? Well, this guide is here to help. It can be hard to know how handy a racial is based on the rather vague descriptions, and what works early won’t work at en

dgame. We’ll discuss each race and why or why not they are the best race for mage.

The first race we’ll discuss is Undead. Undead’s big thing is Will of the Forsaken, which is getting nerfed in 3.3. So Undead are going from top PvP dog to “The guys with the cool cast animation”. Will of the Forsaken will still be useful, but it will pale in comparison to the other racials. And the effect of WotF on PvE is negligible. Skip them if you are wanting to min/max.

The second race on the chopping block is blood elf. Blood elf has Arcane Torrent as their noteworthy racial. At low levels, this is great, allowing you to keep fighting by giving you an extra mana regen. And for PvP, an extra silence is great. But for end-game PvE, we have another race that is mostly useless.

The last race on the Horde side is the often-overlooked Troll. Troll has gotten some decent buffs in recent times, but have continued to reside in the shadows of Undead and Blood Elf. Da Voodoo Shuffle is a useful racial in PvP, reducing the duration of all movement-impairing effects by 15%. And Berserking is possibly the single best Mage racial in the game, acting as a haste buff of 10-30%. For PvP this means getting in that last-second gib before the CC on the healer ends, and in PvE it means higher DPS.

The pecking order of Horde races for Mage is pretty obvious in retrospect. Undead, come 3.3, are mediocre for PvP and continue to be useless for PvE. Blood Elf is, as always, acceptable for PvP and leveling, but lacking in PvE pizazz. And Troll has an enormously powerful racial that benefits both PVPers and PvEers. As hard as it is to believe, Troll is da best.

To conclude, I’ll mention that you should only make your choice on racials if looks absolutely don’t matter to you. The benefits of any given race are minor in the long run, especially with Blizzard slowly working to further marginalize the differences between races. The nerf bat has been hitting every strong racial, and those that are still OP are living on borrowed time.
