Should I Work on Professions While Leveling?
By Mike Miller | October 24, 2009
If you are getting started with World of Warcraft for the first time or you are looking for new and interesting things to explore in game, leveling is likely the first thing on your mind, with your professions right behind it. Some people love them, some people can’t stand them, and other p
The first thing that you should remember is that technically, you do not need to do anything. Having professions or not having them at all is not going to keep you from leveling and there are definitely some level 80 characters who don’t have them at all. Leveling professions takes time and if you are doing a speed run to 80, you can always go back and pick them up later if you feel the lack.
With that in mind, however, remember that professions are far from useless. Consider First Aid, Cooking and Fishing, the three secondary professions. Even if you are speed leveling to 80, First Aid can be leveled easily because you will simply be using the cloth that drops from the mobs you fight for bandages. These bandages can be helpful if you are playing a class that does not heal itself, and if you want to round out your First Aid, there is always cloth on the Auction House that you can use for this very purpose.
Another thing to keep in mind is the bonuses that you can get with some professions. For instance, Herbalism is a gathering profession and even if it seems a little dull, it can get you Lifeblood, which is a heal over time. If you are playing a cast will no ability to heal, this can be essential. On the other hand, when you take Skinning, which can also be leveled as you kill mobs, you will pick up the bonus Master of Anatomy, which gives you a better chance of landing critical hits. Consider how impressive this could make your combat ability and how well this can work for you in the long run!
When it comes right down to it, the primary professions are all ways for you to make gold. If you are saving up for a flying mount or if you happen to be a very gear dependent class, it can make a difference, but if you are only interested in leveling, you might not want to bother. Take some time and look into how you are playing and what you want to do. First Aid can help you devote less time to eating and drinking and it can also help during fights, but beyond that, the other professions can be safely passed up!
